Sedlescombe Organic Vineyard is an independent family business established in 1979 by winemaker Roy Cook producing 30,000 bottles of ‘Estate Bottled’ English organic/biodynamic wine annually. There are over twenty acres of vines including six acres at the famous Bodiam Castle. Managing these vineyards is a big task. Over the years, Sedlescombe have been lucky enough to benefit from hundreds of volunteers from ‘World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms’ (WWOOF) This excellent organisation started in Sussex in 1972 and has been an essential part of vineyard management. The extensive award winning range comprises whites, rose, red and sparkling wines – all Soil Association certified organic and registered with the Vegan Society.
The full range of wines is available to buy online on an overnight service or from the vineyard shop 7 days a week. Visitors are welcomed to the vineyard all year round for a self guided vineyard trail and wine tasting.
Vouchers are available for couples and can be booked from Wednesday – Sunday from March until Christmas. Depending on which voucher is bought, they include a self guided tour of the vineyard and woodland trail, a ploughman’s platter or afternoon tea, a glass of wine, wine tasting, a bottle of wine to take home and in the case of the luxury voucher, an overnight stay in a local hotel! Larger groups are catered for too and a guided tour, a meal and a wine tasting is available. In keeping with the nature of the business, food is organic and locally sourced where possible.
Sedlescombe Vineyard has won various awards over the years for its range of organic and biodynamic wines including the 2011 Regent, which was the first English red wine to win an international award. This year’s awards included silvers for First Release 2016, Old Vine 2016, Bodiam Harvest 2016, Dessert Wine 2016 and Premier Brut 2014 in the International Organic Wine Awards. With many more awards in the Decanter World Wine Awards and the UK Wine Awards.
