Tenterden, The Kentish Market Town
The delightful historic town of Tenterden, known as the ‘Jewel of the Weald’ is a fascinating place to explore with an abundance of noteworthy architectural delights when it comes to the mix of Georgian and Victorian buildings and wonderful Kent-tiled and weatherboard shops and houses. At the heart of the picturesque town is its pretty, broad tree-lined high street. Offering a relaxed pace, for shopping, dining or a weekend break away, this typical county town is also an ideal place to walk and cycle as it is surrounded by glorious Kent countryside.
When it comes to shopping, one of the appealing features of Tenterden is that it has retained the unique charm that a high street bursting with independent boutique shops has to offer. At this time of year (if you haven’t already started!) when our thoughts turn to gift buying and outfit shopping for the upcoming festive and party season this is surely the place to shop? Of course, it does still have a smattering of familiar and well-known stores, which any high street can’t live without, but if you’re looking for the unique and unusual this is the place to come. Whether you require an independent jeweller for that special purchase or are trying to find the ‘perfect’ gift, for a hard to buy person, there are many antique shops full of objects for the curious, plus a wide array of furniture and lifestyle stores, fashion boutiques, bookshops, gift shops and plenty more waiting to be discovered; It’s a pleasure to wander around and walk in and out of the charming shops.
At the moment when you feel you can’t browse and buy anymore, take a breather at one of the many delightful tea rooms and restaurants or pull up a stool in one of bars and pubs to sample a glass, or two, of local wine or beer. Visit the town during the 14 – 25 October and you’ll be in for a treat as the first ever Tenterdine event takes place, celebrating food and drink establishments in Tenterden. Be sure to make reservations, it’s going to popular!
Head to the Market Square on the first Saturday of each month, until the end of the year, and you’ll find artisan makers and artists from the surrounding area all under one roof. You’ll come across everything from handmade wooden gifts and ornaments to fabric bags and handmade soaps to stationery, supporting both artists and locals alike. And in the countdown to Christmas, you can expect lots of festive goodies and gifts.
If you’re looking to discover the town in a fun-filled way for all the family to enjoy, then be sure to collect a free Tenterden Family Fun Trail map, it’s a great way for all ages to get exploring!
You get the sense that there is a real feeling of pride and community within Tenterden. The beautiful kept homes for all to admire, welcoming restaurants and helpful shop owners and staff all add to the appeal of the town’s friendly and welcoming charm.
