St Lawrence College –what makes them stand out?
Founded in 1879, St Lawrence College is a thriving independent boarding and day school, providing a first class education for boys and girls from 3 to 18 years. Located in the seaside town of Ramsgate on the Kent coast, the College benefits from the fresh sea air whilst within easy reach of central London (the high-speed service to St Pancras is only 75 minutes) and within a two-hour drive to the London airports. With 175 full boarders, (weekly boarding is available), the sense of community is both strong and vibrant and visitors often comment that this essence of school is quite tangible!
Pupils at St Lawrence work hard and make the most of the vast array of opportunities available to them. The broadly non-selective nature of the school ensures that a mixed and vibrant community continues to prevail. Results are strong for this medium sized College (160 pupils in the Junior School and 420 in the senior school) with 63% of all grades at GCSE being 9 – 6 (the equivalent of A*-B) and 40% at grades 9 – 7 (A*-A). Incredibly, this percentage rises when one considers specific subjects such as Art (100%), Music (100%), Drama (86%), Chemistry (84%) and Biology (81%)! The same high results were achieved at A Level with 100% of students achieving A*-B grades in Further Maths, English Literature, Art & Design, Music, French and German.
Aside from the hard work that the pupils clearly put in, it is clear that they benefit from the College’s status of ‘World Class High Performance Learning’ (HPL). This is an established teaching and learning framework that recognises that every pupil can be a high performer. HPL aims to create students who have the values, attitudes and attributes that enable them to meet the challenges of adult life. St Lawrence began this journey four years ago and have proudly held this prestigious status since 2020. Clearly, HPL plays its part but that is only one contributing factor. There can be no doubt that positive mental health and academic success are closely linked. St Lawrence College essentially creates a pastoral team around each pupil. This ensures that the wellbeing of every child is maximised to ensure that they fully engage and, ultimately succeed, in all aspects of school life. In short, their pupils are nurtured to ensure they achieve their full potential and are prepared for a life in a fast-moving global society.
Whilst the College offers outstanding facilities, it is the combination of the dedicated staff, the broad and challenging curriculum and the enriching additional activities and opportunities that really matters. St Lawrence College equips their pupils with the tools to succeed and the confidence to know that they can! Plus, securing their position, once again, as one of the top 100 schools for cricket, they most certainly know what they are doing!
