The Junior King’s School was founded in 1879 as the preparatory school to The King’s School Canterbury. In 1929 the School expanded to a stunning eighty-acre countryside location at Milner Court, Sturry, located just two miles from the city. The 16th century Manor House has since been augmented by superb educational, boarding, extra-curricular and sporting facilities.
Pre-prep
The transition from home to school can be daunting for both children and parents, so we do our utmost to make it a happy and enjoyable process. We find that children settle in quickly and find the warm, supportive atmosphere – along with lots to see and do – both reassuring and exciting.
In its delightful Kentish Oast House setting, Pre-Prep has its own spacious hall, library and seven bright and cheerful classrooms complete with ICT facilities. Outside, children have their own adventure playground as well as the opportunity to share many of the main school facilities.
Children can start from the age of three, with specialist early years teachers creating a happy and secure environment where children are encouraged to develop their skills through a variety of enjoyable and stimulating activities.
As children progress through Pre-Prep they will find more and more opportunities both academically and in terms of sport and creative arts. At the same time, our high adult-to-child ratio ensures that each individual receives the personal attention they require.
Prep
At the start of Year 3, when the children leave the Pre-prep or they join us for the first time, they enter Junior House. From that secure base they learn to move further afield into the school for certain lessons, ready for the next step of the Middle school, which begins at the start of Year 5. Many of the children’s lessons over the next two academic years are taught by specialist teachers, but the child’s form tutor sees them regularly throughout the day and teaches the humanities programme.
Finally the boys and girls really get to spread their wings in the Upper school, and are taught by subject specialists all day, touching base with their form teachers twice a day. In their last two years at Junior King’s they receive the freedom and responsibility that they deserve and desire, as they prepare to leave us.
Throughout their time at Junior King’s, the children are given the levels of support and encouragement that enable them to flourish and fulfil their potential.
