The Observatory Science Centre, Herstmonceux

Nestled in the heart of the Sussex countryside, a remarkable centre of scientific discovery continues to inspire visitors of all ages. For three decades, this unique venue has been dedicated to making science accessible, engaging, and fun. Housed within a historic site once central to astronomical research, it has evolved into an interactive hub where learning meets exploration. With a wealth of interactive exhibits, historic telescopes, and a dynamic events programme, it offers an immersive experience like no other. Whether you’re captivated by the wonders of the cosmos or fascinated by the principles of physics, there is something here for everyone. As it celebrates 30 years of innovation and education, visitors are invited to join in the celebrations and witness the magic of science in action.

Previously the home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, the Grade II listed venue is part of Science Projects Ltd and has been operating as an educational visitor attraction with charitable status since 1995

Now celebrating 30 years of restoration of the site to create The Observatory Science Centre you can see and enjoy today. Once described as a labour of love unfolding in the Sussex countryside’ it has grown to become an outstanding attraction and resource, bringing science to the public in a unique historic setting.

When we started work Sir Patrick Moore jubilantly announced that the observatory had been saved for science. Thanks to the dedication of all who have worked and volunteered here, thousands of visitors have experienced spectacular science and the joy of just being in this very special place.

Throughout 2025 we continue to offer school visits, where learning through play, outside the classroom is so valuable for sparking young peoples’ interest in science. There’s no better place to see science at work than through our exhibits, topic-based workshops and science shows! We are frequently told by visitors that their first visit to The Observatory was on a school trip – and now they bring their own children to share those memories and inspire the next generation of scientists!

Visitors have even more science to enjoy this season as we introduce some new exhibits, and our Celebration Sundays – launching soon to celebrate our 30th year. We will also be bringing back our Family (early) evenings, where you can explore the cosmos with our planetarium shows and the Science Festival (26th-27th July), with lots of extra activities to enjoy.

Camping

When it comes to school holidays, In addition to our usual activities, children aged 7 – 11 years can attend our fantastic workshops which are a great way to have fun and learn at the same time. They are fully interactive; children are totally immersed in carrying out experiments or making and creating (depending on the type of workshop). Many of the workshops involve an element of Make and Take’ projects where the children are able to take home what they have made in the workshop.

Stargazing opportunities are abundant this year, with more public stargazing evenings than ever. It’s the perfect time to book as these dates can sell out fast! Our team, including fantastic volunteers love to share their knowledge and (if the weather is clear) guide you through the night sky with our iconic historic telescopes.

Themed events, Astronomy courses and our extremely popular Astronomy Festival are all on offer this 2025. Our evening courses and telescope clinic give you the opportunity to begin your astronomy journey or deepen your knowledge, with fantastic content in an unparalleled setting.
