Joanna Bowtell, Kent Student, Overcomes Dyslexia to Excel at The Duke of York’s Royal Military School and Secures Place at University of Cambridge
The Duke of York’s Royal Military School is proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Joanna Bowtell, a dedicated and resilient student. Joanna, a local Kent girl, was diagnosed with dyslexia during her primary school years, a challenge she met with determination and support from her family and the school.
From a young age, Joanna required special allowances during her education, including a scribe, reader, and extra time for her SATs. Recognising the pressures of traditional academic routes, Joanna’s parents chose not to subject her to the 11+ exams for grammar school admission. Instead, they sought a school that offered small class sizes, exceptional all-round education, and a nurturing environment where students could thrive both academically and socially.
In 2017, Joanna joined The Duke of York’s Royal Military School as Year 7 student, where she found not only the academic support she needed but also an opportunity to grow as a leader. During her time at the school, she captained the girls’ hockey team, demonstrating her commitment to teamwork and athletic excellence. Moreover, she held a significant leadership position as Senior Under Officer, a role that allowed her to mentor younger students and develop her leadership skills further.
With the school’s tailored support and emphasis on character development, Joanna excelled academically, achieving 7 or above in all her GCSE subjects. Her hard work and resilience paid off, and in September 2024, she embarked on the next chapter of her academic journey, beginning her degree in Geography at the prestigious University of Cambridge.
Reflecting on her time at The Duke of York’s Royal Military School, Joanna expressed gratitude for the experience that shaped her success. “I would not have achieved the results I did or be anywhere near where I am now if I had been anywhere else. I am incredibly proud to be a Dukie, and I love this school — the facilities, the experience, but most of all the people. This is a very special place, and I know I was very lucky to be able to be here.”
The school’s Headmaster also shared his pride in Joanna’s achievements: “We are incredibly proud of Joanna’s progress and the leadership she demonstrated during her time with us. Her story is an inspiration to all students, proving that with the right support and determination, anything is possible.”
